Washington, May 5: President Donald Trump stated that tariffs will remain a central tool in U.S. trade policy. He emphasized that these tariffs signal strong actions against China and other nations that have harmed American businesses.
During a White House briefing, Trump noted that cheap imports have negatively impacted domestic companies. He is set to visit China later this month, where he will meet President Xi Jinping. Ahead of this trip, he remarked, “China and other countries are producing products that are not as good but cost less.”
He argued that tariffs are helping to reverse this trend and increase revenue. Trump stated, “Because of the use of tariffs, we have all this money.”
The president indicated that current tariff levels might not be sufficient. He pointed out sectors under continuous pressure from foreign competition, saying, “In my opinion, tariffs are really not high enough.”
Trump mentioned that companies can avoid tariffs by shifting production back to the U.S. He added, “If they come here and do business, there are no tariffs.”
He linked tariffs to significant improvements in American manufacturing, stating, “We lost our car industry, and they are all coming back.”
Describing U.S.-China relations as competitive but not adversarial, he said, “We are ahead of China in AI. There is friendly competition between us.”
Additionally, he criticized previous trade policies, asserting, “This country has been taken advantage of for decades. Past administrations failed to protect domestic industries. Tariffs have made our country richer.”
Trump highlighted specific sectors, including furniture and manufacturing, where he believes tariffs will aid in bringing production back to the U.S. “We are going to bring all the furniture back. You will see it.”
He acknowledged potential legal challenges to tariff policies but reassured, “We have other ways to impose tariffs. They are more tested and stronger.”
