Washington, September 19 (Daily Kiran) : President Donald Trump is set to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping next week during a state visit in Washington. The discussions will focus on artificial intelligence (AI), trade, and the supply of rare earth minerals.
U.S. officials have indicated that there will be no agreement on easing export controls for mineral supplies, as Beijing has already made commitments in this area. This meeting will take place following Trump’s address at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, where he is expected to speak on Iran’s nuclear ambitions, the situation in Gaza, and his administration’s diplomatic efforts.
A senior U.S. official revealed that the agenda for both leaders will include discussions on AI and the current trade agreement, referred to as the “Busan Truce.” However, officials did not announce any specific agreements or speculate on the outcomes of the meeting.
Regarding rare earth minerals, the official expressed hope that China would honor its previous commitments to supply these minerals to the U.S. and the global economy. The official noted that China’s performance in this area has not met American expectations.
The administration is also discussing a potential reduction in tariffs on select goods in non-sensitive and non-strategic sectors, although no specific details were provided.
On the issue of access for Chinese companies to the U.S. automobile market, officials stated that Trump will not compromise on national security. Investments must still comply with existing regulations and laws.
Another pressing issue will be the chemicals related to fentanyl. A senior U.S. official accused China of being a primary supplier of these chemicals to Mexican cartels, emphasizing that recent arrests do not match the comprehensive action that Washington desires. The official stated, “We want to see much more systematic change.”
Officials also confirmed that U.S. sanctions against Chinese and Hong Kong entities accused of supporting Iran will remain in effect. Although Trump has raised the issue of individuals wrongfully detained in China during previous meetings with Xi, he refrained from confirming any specific cases for this upcoming discussion.
On Wednesday, Trump will welcome Xi Jinping and his wife, Peng Liyuan, at Joint Base Andrews. The agenda for Thursday includes a welcome ceremony at the White House, a military review, bilateral talks, and a state dinner in the East Room. Before Xi’s departure on Friday, both leaders and their wives will meet privately for tea and visit the National Archives.
Before returning to Washington, Trump will meet with the British and Japanese prime ministers and leaders from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) in New York on Tuesday. He will also host a welcoming ceremony for world leaders and meet with Venezuela’s interim president.
Trump’s address at the General Assembly will cover efforts to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and progress on his 20-point Gaza peace plan.
