Washington, May 20: U.S. President Donald Trump stated that Chinese President Xi Jinping assured him that Beijing is not supplying weapons to Iran. This declaration comes as the United States intensifies diplomatic efforts to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
During a visit to the construction site of a new ballroom at the White House, Trump spoke to reporters amid rising tensions in the Middle East. He emphasized that Xi directly assured him, saying, “President Xi promised me that he is not sending any weapons to Iran. That’s a great promise, and I trust him.”
Trump also noted that he has developed a good relationship with Xi during recent meetings. “We had a wonderful time in China. President Xi and I spent great moments together,” he added.
In his remarks, Trump discussed Iran’s military capabilities and the security situation in the Middle East, particularly mentioning issues related to the Strait of Hormuz and Gulf nations. He asserted that China also desires peace in the region due to its significant oil needs that depend on the Middle East.
He accused Iran of using maritime routes for pressure tactics over the past several decades. “Iran has used these sea routes as military leverage for 47 years. This is not just Iran’s route; it is an international waterway,” Trump stated.
The U.S. President revealed that countries like Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE, Bahrain, and Kuwait are collaborating with the U.S. on issues related to Iran. “We are all negotiating together. Israel has also been a good ally,” he mentioned.
Trump claimed that Iran’s military strength has significantly diminished. According to him, “Our estimates suggest that 82% of Iran’s missiles have been destroyed. Its navy and air force are nearly completely devastated.”
However, he acknowledged that Iran still possesses some retaliatory capabilities, but its ability to rebuild its military strength has been severely weakened. “We have targeted most of their manufacturing centers, so their capacity to develop new military capabilities is greatly reduced,” Trump explained.
He also indicated that the U.S. was close to taking additional military action, but regional allies requested more time for diplomacy.
Trump reiterated that Iran must not be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons. “If Iran gets nuclear weapons, Israel will be the first to face the threat. This could lead to a situation of nuclear devastation,” he warned.
He connected this issue to the global oil market, stating that prolonged conflict in the Middle East could impact oil supply and fuel prices. Trump’s statements are viewed as part of a strategy to maintain pressure on Iran while keeping communication channels open with major powers like China.
Notably, China is considered one of Iran’s largest economic partners and remains a significant buyer of Iranian oil despite U.S. sanctions. China has consistently opposed unilateral sanctions on Iran and advocates for a negotiated solution regarding its nuclear program.
