Mumbai, April 10: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is considering the implementation of Direct-to-Device (D2D) services using spectrum designated for mobile satellite services. This technology is already in use in several countries worldwide, with Starlink being a prominent player expanding its reach. TRAI recognizes the need for a strategic rollout of D2D services in India.
This initiative aims to enhance connectivity in rural and remote regions, where many areas still lack mobile network access. The challenges of deploying terrestrial networks in these locations have hindered progress.
In its announcement, TRAI stated, βIn this context, the two variants of D2D service, namely D2D service via satellite using MSS spectrum and D2D service via satellite using IMT spectrum, may potentially enable widespread connectivity in the country, especially in rural and remote areas.β
In addition to Starlink, several other companies are expected to introduce D2D services in India. To foster healthy competition in the market, it is crucial for policymakers to develop well-thought-out regulations.
