Tragic Stampede at Bihar Temple Claims Seven Lives

Patna, March 31: A devastating incident occurred in Nalanda, the home district of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, during the Maghda fair on Tuesday. A sudden stampede at the renowned Shitala Mata temple resulted in the deaths of seven individuals, with a significant number of women among the deceased.

Reports indicate that more than twelve people sustained injuries in the chaos. On the last Tuesday of Chaitra, a large crowd had gathered at the temple for worship when the stampede broke out. Panic ensued as people rushed in all directions, leading to many being trampled.

Witnesses claim that the administration failed to implement any crowd control measures, despite the regular influx of visitors every Tuesday. Following the incident, senior officials, including the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), arrived at the scene to initiate rescue operations. Worship activities have been suspended, and the injured have been transported to hospitals for treatment.

The temple and fair were reportedly overcrowded. Locals noted that on Tuesdays, visitors often do not queue, believing they should rush inside first, which contributed to the stampede. The community is expressing outrage, attributing the tragedy to administrative negligence.

Additionally, it is noteworthy that President Droupadi Murmu will be visiting Bihar on March 31. During her visit, she is expected to attend the convocation ceremony at Nalanda University, which will host students and scholars from across the country and abroad.
