Mumbai, May 29: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has expressed serious concern over the tragic deaths of 13 individuals due to toxic alcohol consumption in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad. He has instructed the police commissioners of both cities to take the strictest action against the culprits and ensure that no leniency is shown to any accused.
The Chief Minister stated that a thorough investigation will be conducted to ensure that anyone involved in this racket faces justice. In a conversation with reporters, Fadnavis emphasized that this incident is not just an accident but is being treated as a case of murder. The most severe legal charges will be applied against the offenders.
Fadnavis also confirmed that he is in constant contact with the police commissioners of Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad. The police have identified the location where alcohol was allegedly being mixed with toxic chemicals like methanol.
So far, eight suspects have been arrested, and a large-scale operation is underway to apprehend the remaining individuals. Hospitals are prioritizing the treatment of seriously ill patients to prevent further fatalities.
“I have spoken with the police commissioners of Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad. They have pinpointed the site where this substance was produced. Eight people have been arrested, and more arrests will follow. Strict action will be taken against the guilty. This case is indeed akin to murder, and very stringent charges are being applied. No one will be spared,” stated Fadnavis.
Following the Chief Minister’s directives, the police have initiated swift action. Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar has arrived at the scene to oversee operations in affected areas like Hadapsar.
To dismantle the illegal alcohol network, police, the state excise department, and forensic teams have launched joint raids. Forensic investigations suggest that approximately 215 liters of toxic industrial methanol were mixed into the illicit alcohol.
The main suspect in this case is notorious liquor mafia figure Yogesh Wankhede, who already has criminal cases registered against him. Police are preparing a robust legal case against this entire racket based on medical reports and forensic evidence.
