Athens, February 22: A tragic incident occurred off the southern coast of Crete, Greece, on Saturday morning, resulting in the deaths of five migrants. Authorities have reported that approximately 20 individuals are still missing following the boat capsizing. The accident took place about 15 nautical miles (27 km) south of the coastal village of Kala Limena.
The Greek Coast Guard confirmed that a wooden boat carrying migrants overturned in the southern maritime region of Crete. This unfortunate event happened near the southern shore of the island, close to Kala Limena.
According to the Greek National Broadcaster ERT, the incident unfolded when one of two commercial vessels dispatched by the National Search and Rescue Center approached the migrants’ boat. A ladder was lowered from the ship, and as passengers attempted to climb aboard, the boat lost its balance. Many individuals shifted to one side, causing the vessel to capsize.
A cargo ship flying the Panamanian flag managed to rescue 20 people, while the Hellenic Coast Guard and the European Union’s border agency, Frontex, recovered three bodies. Later, two additional bodies were found in the sea.
Survivors reported that approximately 50 people were on board the boat, raising concerns that the death toll may increase. Search and rescue operations are ongoing, with coast guard vessels, passing commercial ships, a helicopter, and a military aircraft deployed to assist.
Earlier this month, Greek authorities also recovered the bodies of two migrants along the Evros River, which forms a natural border between Greece and Turkey. The deceased were estimated to be around 20 and 35 years old.
