New Delhi, March 31: President Droupadi Murmu and Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan expressed their sorrow on Tuesday regarding the stampede at the Sheetala Mata Temple in Nalanda, Bihar.
President Murmu’s official office shared on the social media platform X, “The news of the tragic stampede at a temple in Nalanda, Bihar, resulting in the loss of many devotees, is extremely saddening. I extend my heartfelt condolences to all the bereaved families. I wish for the speedy recovery of all the injured.”
Vice President Radhakrishnan also conveyed his grief on X, stating, “I am deeply pained by the tragic loss of life and property due to the stampede in Nalanda, Bihar. My heartfelt sympathies go out to the grieving families. I pray for the swift recovery of those injured in this unfortunate incident.”
Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his sorrow over the incident at the Sheetala Mata Temple in Nalanda. He announced financial assistance of ₹2 lakh for the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar declared a compensation of ₹6 lakh for the families of the victims.
The stampede occurred in the Dipnagar police station area of Nalanda district during a religious gathering at the temple, where an unexpectedly large crowd caused the situation to spiral out of control. Eight devotees lost their lives, and eight to ten others sustained injuries.
In the aftermath of this incident, the Dipnagar police station chief has been suspended on charges of negligence. Following the report of the incident, the Nalanda district police administration promptly arrived at the scene to conduct rescue and relief operations. The injured were immediately admitted to nearby hospitals for better treatment.
