Chennai, April 19: The renowned hill station of Nilgiri in Tamil Nadu is experiencing a significant surge in tourist numbers, leading to increased traffic congestion in key areas like Ooty.
Visitors from various districts and states are flocking to Nilgiri to enjoy its scenic beauty, with many opting for private vehicles for convenience. This preference has resulted in long queues of vehicles on winding mountain roads, causing delays and disruptions in traffic flow.
As preparations for the annual summer festival in Ooty ramp up, the situation is expected to worsen in the coming days. Popular attractions such as flower shows, vegetable exhibitions, fruit displays, and fragrance exhibitions are set to take place at various locations in the hilly region.
Traditionally, these seasonal events draw large crowds, further increasing the number of tourists. The announcement of summer vacations in schools across Tamil Nadu has also contributed to the rise in visitors, prompting families to plan trips to hill stations like Ooty and Kodaikanal.
Consequently, there has been a notable increase in tourist numbers over the past few days, placing additional pressure on local infrastructure and transportation systems.
Officials have indicated that the heavy reliance on private vehicles is a major cause of traffic congestion in the hilly areas. In response, they have urged tourists to make greater use of special tourist buses and locally operated transport services, which have been arranged to facilitate movement within the region.
On Sunday, traffic in Ooty slowed significantly, with long lines of vehicles observed at major intersections, including Charing Cross and ATC Road. Local traffic police have been deployed to manage traffic flow and prevent jams, but officials warned that if the current situation persists, congestion may worsen.
Tourism officials have once again appealed to visitors to plan their trips responsibly, avoid peak times whenever possible, and utilize public or shared transportation options.
With the summer festival season just beginning, managing the increasing number of tourists remains a significant challenge for district administration.
