Top U.S. Counterterrorism Official Resigns in Protest Against Attacks on Iran

Washington, March 17: Joseph Kent, the top counterterrorism official in the United States, has resigned in protest against ongoing attacks on Iran. In a letter addressed to President Donald Trump, he expressed that such actions were unnecessary and that he could not support this war.

Kent shared his resignation letter on social media, labeling the airstrikes on Iran as unwarranted and influenced by pressure from Israel. He described his decision as a response to his conscience, stating, “After much consideration, I have decided to resign from my position as Director of the National Counterterrorism Center, effective today. I cannot support the war in Iran against my conscience.”

He emphasized that there was no immediate threat to the U.S. from Iran and asserted that the war was initiated under pressure from Israel and its powerful American lobby. Advocating for ideals and values, Kent remarked, “I support the values and foreign policies that you campaigned on in 2016, 2020, and 2024, which you implemented during your first term. By June 2025, you understood that wars in the Middle East are a trap that takes the precious lives of American patriots and depletes our nation’s wealth and prosperity.”

Kent criticized the Trump administration, stating, “In your first administration, you understood better than any modern president how to decisively use military power to avoid getting entangled in endless wars. You proved this by eliminating Qassem Soleimani and defeating ISIS.”

He shared his personal pain, reflecting on his background and the loss of his wife, writing, “This campaign has completely undermined your ‘America First’ agenda and incited war-supporting sentiments to promote war with Iran… As a veteran who has been deployed to combat 11 times and as a ‘Gold Star husband’ who lost my beloved wife Shannon in a war initiated by Israel, I cannot support sending the next generation to fight and die in a war that benefits neither the American people nor justifies the loss of American lives.”

According to Kent, a coalition of senior Israeli officials and influential figures in American media has been spreading misinformation to create an environment conducive to starting a war against Iran.

In closing, he urged the president to reconsider this path, stating, “Now is the time for bold action. You can change your course and choose a new path for our country, or you can allow us to slide further into decline and chaos. The choice is now in your hands.”
