Kolkata, July 21: The faction of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) led by former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has brought attention to the Calcutta High Court regarding the vandalism of the stage set for their ‘Shaheed Divas Rally’ scheduled for today.
Earlier, the TMC faction sent an email to the office of Acting Chief Justice Tapa Brata Chakraborty, reporting the vandalism allegedly carried out by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers on Monday night, claiming they received covert assistance from the police.
When the Calcutta High Court opened in the morning, a petition was filed before Justice Sougata Bhattacharya’s single-judge bench. The petition alleged that the vandalism constituted contempt of court, as the rally was being held in front of the Birla Planetarium in central Kolkata following a court order issued last week.
Accepting the petition, Justice Bhattacharya demanded an explanation from the Kolkata Police by this afternoon. He expressed surprise at how such incidents could occur, especially since the court had granted permission for the rally in the presence of the state’s Advocate General just last week.
Justice Bhattacharya also reminded the joint commissioner of Kolkata Police to ensure that law and order would not be disrupted due to the rally. He stated that despite clear orders, this situation was embarrassing for the court.
Mamata Banerjee stated, “The police administration is obstructing our rally, which is a contempt of court. Do not play with the laws of the country. If this continues, we will file a contempt petition against the state government and police administration.”
On July 21, three parallel rallies will take place to commemorate ‘Shaheed Divas,’ honoring 13 Youth Congress workers killed in a police firing during a protest rally in 1993 under the Left Front government.
