Kolkata, March 25: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has expressed strong objections to the appointment of Surjit Roy as the Returning Officer for the Bhawanipur assembly constituency in West Bengal. The party has submitted a complaint to the Election Commission, alleging that Surjit Roy has close ties with Suvendu Adhikari and lacks impartiality.
In a letter addressed to the Election Commission, TMC highlighted serious concerns regarding Roy’s appointment during the ongoing electoral process in West Bengal. Surjit Roy previously served as the Block Development Officer (BDO) for Nandigram-2. The party raised doubts about his independence and ability to perform his duties as Returning Officer.
TMC accused Surjit Roy of having a close association with Suvendu Adhikari, who is contesting from the Bhawanipur assembly seat. This connection raises significant concerns about potential bias and fairness in Roy’s role as Returning Officer.
The party also pointed out that Roy’s current position as Additional Director of Land Records does not align with the seniority typically associated with such roles, which are usually held by Joint Secretary-level officials. Questions have been raised regarding the timing and circumstances of his appointment.
In their letter, TMC emphasized that the role of a Returning Officer is crucial for ensuring free, fair, and transparent elections. Any suspicion of bias, conflict of interest, or lack of independence undermines public trust in the electoral process and contradicts the Election Commission’s duty to conduct fair elections as mandated by Article 324 of the Constitution. It is well established that free and fair elections are integral to the Constitution’s basic framework.
TMC has demanded the immediate cancellation of Surjit Roy’s appointment as Returning Officer for the Bhawanipur assembly constituency. They also called for his removal from all election-related duties to maintain the integrity of the electoral process. The party urged the Election Commission to appoint an independent, fair, and senior officer for Bhawanipur.
