Ladakh, September 9 (Kiran News) — A massive avalanche struck an Army post at the Siachen Glacier on Tuesday, claiming the lives of three soldiers from the Mahar Regiment, including two Agniveers.

According to the Army, the soldiers were trapped under snow for nearly five hours before rescue teams could reach the site. An Army Captain was also caught in the avalanche but was rescued safely.
Specialised Army teams were immediately deployed, while additional rescue forces from Leh and Udhampur were rushed to accelerate relief operations, which are still underway.
Avalanches are frequent in the high-altitude regions of Ladakh and Siachen during winter months. Known as the world’s highest battlefield, Siachen subjects soldiers to extreme conditions with temperatures plunging to minus 60 degrees Celsius, blizzards, and snow-covered peaks.
So far, more than 1,000 Indian soldiers have lost their lives at Siachen due to harsh weather and natural disasters, in addition to combat duties. Soldiers here face a constant battle not only against the enemy but also against the unforgiving climate and terrain.
Further details are awaited.
