Bangkok, May 1: The Thai government has announced significant changes to its labor framework in celebration of National Labor Day. This decision comes in response to rapidly evolving geopolitical challenges and technological advancements.
Deputy Prime Minister Yodchanan Wongsubun highlighted two major challenges facing the workforce: ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and fluctuations in supply chains, alongside domestic issues such as artificial intelligence (AI), an aging population, and the need for green energy.
According to a report by Xinhua, the government is shifting its priorities to address these challenges. Yodchanan stated that the nation’s success will now be measured not just by economic growth, but also by creating a “Good Job Economy.” This initiative aims to improve job quality, ensure secure incomes, and enhance the dignity of workers.
To achieve this, the government is establishing a national skills database, collaborating with various ministries. This system will directly link employers’ needs with workers’ capabilities. Additionally, internationally recognized certifications will be provided to help individuals secure better wages.
Furthermore, Yodchanan, who also serves as the Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation, introduced a new funding initiative called “Learn with a Budget, Graduate with a Job.” This program aims to upskill workers from basic technology users to high-value creators in the digital economy.
The government also announced plans to transform farmers into “smart farmers” and strengthen social security for gig economy workers and those in the informal sector.
The United Nations extended its greetings on International Labor Day via social media, stating, “Happy International Labor Day! For over 100 years, the International Labour Organization (ILO) has promoted social justice and better working conditions for all, including respect, equality, fair income, and safe work.”
The ILO’s mission is to advance social justice and internationally recognized labor rights to maintain peace and stability worldwide.
