Srinagar, July 31: A terrorist attack in Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir resulted in the tragic deaths of two laborers from Uttar Pradesh and Chhattisgarh on Friday.
Officials reported that the assailants opened fire on the two workers at a brick kiln in the village of Kelam during the evening hours.
An official stated that both victims were rushed to the Government Medical College and Hospital in Anantnag for urgent treatment. However, despite the doctors’ best efforts, the two injured laborers, identified as Deepak from Chhattisgarh and Bhupinder from Uttar Pradesh, succumbed to their injuries.
Authorities have since cordoned off the area and launched a search operation to locate the attackers.
This incident occurred amid an increase in anti-terror operations in the Kashmir Valley, following recent acts of violence. Last week, terrorists killed Ashiq Hussain Qureshi, a head constable of the Jammu and Kashmir Armed Police.
Since the 1990s, terrorist groups have shifted their strategies, focusing on targeting prominent individuals, judges, and government employees, as well as launching attacks on Kashmiri Pandits. After 2019, these groups began employing ‘hybrid’ tactics and less visible intimidation methods.
To disrupt economic integration, migrant laborers, roadside vendors, and truck drivers from outside Jammu and Kashmir have been systematically attacked in public spaces.
In October 2024, terrorists targeted infrastructure projects, including an assault on a construction camp in Ganderbal’s Gagengir, which resulted in the deaths of several external engineers and laborers. Security forces in Jammu and Kashmir are closely monitoring transit corridors and work sites of migrant laborers.
Senior police and CRPF officials have arrived at the scene to oversee the operation aimed at tracking down the attackers.
