Hyderabad, June 17: The Telangana government announced on Wednesday its initiative to encourage farmers to cultivate premium rice varieties that have strong demand in both national and international markets.
Telangana’s Deputy Chief Minister, Bhatti Vikramarka, emphasized the need to inspire farmers to grow high-quality rice. During a cabinet sub-committee meeting held at Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Telangana Secretariat, he stated that the government is committed to supporting and protecting farmers.
He explained that the government is pursuing a dual objective: to provide high-quality rice to impoverished families and to empower farmers economically.
The meeting, chaired by the Deputy Chief Minister, included the Minister for Civil Supplies, Uttam Kumar Reddy, and the Minister for Agriculture, Tummla Nageshwar Rao. They reviewed agricultural production in the state, the rice procurement process, storage facilities, and preparations for the upcoming Kharif season.
During the meeting, the Telangana State Farmers Commission recommended promoting large-scale cultivation of profitable rice varieties such as BPT 5204, Telangana Sona, Jai Shriram, and HMT. These varieties are in high demand in both domestic and international markets, potentially increasing farmers’ income.
The commission also noted that there is a sufficient supply of quality seeds for these premium varieties. Cultivating them could significantly boost farmers’ earnings, prompting the government to prioritize these varieties and run extensive awareness campaigns in villages to inform farmers about their benefits.
According to the commission, promoting these varieties in the upcoming season will enhance farmers’ incomes and strengthen market opportunities, making Telangana’s agricultural economy more profitable and sustainable.
Additionally, the commission highlighted that the reduction in procurement by the Food Corporation of India (FCI) is causing difficulties for farmers in the state. They pointed out that FCI is not purchasing boiled rice, adversely affecting farmers and the rice industry.
The commission also stated that the policies of the central BJP government are creating challenges for Telangana’s farmers.
Present at the meeting were Farmers Commission Chairman M. Kodanda Reddy, Seed Corporation Chairman Anvesh Reddy, Civil Supplies Commissioner Stephen Ravindra, National Millers Association President Devendra Reddy, and other officials.
