Hyderabad, March 13: The Telangana government has officially designated the Gurramguda forest area in the Ranga Reddy district’s Mangal division as a reserved forest following a prolonged legal battle. A senior official confirmed this development on Friday.
According to the official, the state government issued a government order (GO) under Section 15 of the Telangana Forest Act, 1967, declaring 424 acres and 31 guntas of forest land as reserved.
Dr. C. Suvarna, the Chief Conservator of Forests, stated that the GO MS No. 7 was released on March 9, 2026, through the Department of Environment, Forest, Science, and Technology. This notification completed the legal process concerning the land, granting it official reserved forest status and robust legal protection.
He noted that 102 acres of land located in Survey Number 201/1 of the Sahebnagar Kalan village had been embroiled in legal disputes for years. The case, widely known as the ‘Sahebnagar Kalan case,’ was deliberated in various courts. Ultimately, the Supreme Court upheld the forest department’s claim, emphasizing the need to protect the forest land from encroachment and unauthorized claims.
In December 2025, the Supreme Court recognized the 102 acres in Sahebnagar Kalan as part of the Gurramguda reserved forest block, denying its designation as private land.
Previously, the forest department faced setbacks in lower courts and the Telangana High Court. Officials indicated that some individuals claiming to be legal heirs of Salar Jung III Mir Yusuf Ali Khan attempted to encroach upon this land.
The Chief Conservator of Forests remarked that this ruling strengthens the government’s rights over the land.
The state government has also decided to develop this area into a large urban forest park. Given the rapid urbanization in Hyderabad, the park could serve as a vital green space for city residents.
It will be developed as a location where people can enjoy nature, raise environmental awareness, and spend quality time with their families.
The statement emphasized that under the leadership of the Chief Minister, the Telangana government prioritizes the protection of forest land and the prevention of encroachment. Efforts are also underway to expand urban forest parks and green spaces around Hyderabad.
Declaring the Gurramguda forest area as a reserved forest is a significant step in this direction.
