Patna, March 15: The political atmosphere in Bihar is heating up ahead of the Rajya Sabha elections scheduled for March 16. Both alliances are engaged in meetings and strategizing.
On Sunday, Tejashwi Yadav, the national executive president of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), attended an Iftar party hosted by Akhtarul Iman, the state president of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM). A large number of fasting individuals were also present at the event.
After the Iftar party, Tejashwi Yadav spoke to reporters, expressing confidence that all secular parties would unite to contest the Rajya Sabha elections. He mentioned that they attended the Iftar party to seek AIMIM’s support for the elections, asserting that together they would defeat the BJP.
Meanwhile, Akhtarul Iman stated that there is no specific strategy for the Rajya Sabha elections, as the focus is on voting for the candidate. He announced that all five AIMIM legislators have decided to vote in favor of the RJD and the Grand Alliance’s candidate.
This election cycle sees five Rajya Sabha seats from Bihar becoming vacant. The NDA has fielded five candidates, while the RJD has put forth one. In the 243-member Bihar Assembly, a candidate requires the support of 41 legislators to win. Currently, the NDA holds 202 seats, making it likely to secure four seats. Even after winning four, they will need additional support to claim the fifth seat.
On the other hand, the opposition, led by the RJD, comprises a Grand Alliance with a total of 35 legislators. To secure a seat, they will also need support from other legislators. AIMIM has five members, while the BSP has one.
