Chennai, March 4: The Tamil Nadu unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) sharply criticized the Congress and DMK-led coalition on Wednesday. The BJP accused them of “political hypocrisy” and “anti-national conduct” following protests in Chennai against the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
BJP spokesperson A.N.S. Prasad stated that the demonstrations held on March 1 and 2, mourning Khamenei, who was killed in U.S.-Israeli attacks on February 28, reflect a misguided political agenda that undermines India’s national interests.
The BJP leader labeled the attempt by some protest groups to march towards the U.S. Consulate in Chennai during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit as irresponsible, posing a risk to public order.
According to the party, such protests targeting foreign diplomatic missions are inappropriate and could damage India’s international image.
Prasad also accused Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi of making statements that question the Indian government’s stance on developments in West Asia. He argued that such comments are politically motivated and could weaken national unity at a time when the government is focused on ensuring the safety of Indian citizens in the region.
Highlighting the government’s diplomatic efforts, the BJP spokesperson noted that Prime Minister Modi has engaged in urgent consultations with leaders from several Gulf nations, including Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Jordan, to ensure the safety of Indian citizens amid rising tensions in West Asia.
