Washington, April 28: Top U.S. officials have confirmed that the quick actions of the U.S. Secret Service and other security agencies thwarted a significant attack during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. All agencies coordinated effectively, apprehending the assailant within moments.
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanch stated, “Thanks to the bravery and professionalism of law enforcement, this horrific incident was averted.” He noted that agents swiftly detained the suspect.
The incident occurred on April 25 at the Washington Hilton Hotel, where the President, Vice President, and several senior officials were attending the annual event.
According to the investigation, at approximately 8:40 PM, the suspect reached a security checkpoint on the terrace level of the hotel, located above the ballroom. Gunfire was heard as he passed through the checkpoint. A Secret Service officer was shot in the chest but survived due to wearing a bulletproof vest.
The officer returned fire. Officials reported that he fired multiple rounds, causing the assailant to fall to the ground before being arrested.
Blanch emphasized that the response adhered strictly to training and established protocols. He remarked, “Law enforcement did not fail; they executed their training effectively.”
FBI Director Kash Patel highlighted the rapid response of the agents on-site. He mentioned that the FBI deployed a mobile command center, evidence-gathering teams, and SWAT units. Searches and interrogations were also conducted in several states, including California and Connecticut.
Evidence collected from the scene, including firearms and shell casings, has been sent to the FBI labs in Quantico for analysis. Investigators also visited the suspect’s hotel room, recovering crucial documents and items related to the case. During this time, agents interviewed several witnesses from the nearly 2,000 attendees at the event.
Patel praised the injured officer, stating, “He prevented a major attack from becoming even more dangerous.” He added that the security forces successfully protected the nation.
Officials reported that the operation involved collaboration between the Secret Service, FBI, Department of Homeland Security, and Metropolitan Police.
Blanch noted that the investigation is ongoing and urged caution regarding unverified reports. He stated, “Some information is accurate, some is not… We will provide information at the appropriate time.” He also encouraged anyone with information to share it with investigative agencies to ensure a thorough understanding of the incident.
The White House Correspondents’ Dinner is a significant annual event attended by leaders, journalists, and many prominent figures, necessitating stringent security measures.
