Kolkata: Amid the special intensive revision (SIR) of the voter list in West Bengal, Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari has accused officials of receiving illegal orders to manipulate the verification process. He claimed this reflects a collusion between the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the state administration.
Sharing a screenshot on the social media platform X, Suvendu Adhikari stated, “The shocking and shameless ‘TMC-Mamata administration nexus’ has come to light during the SIR process. A purported WhatsApp message sent by the Additional District Magistrate (ADM) of South 24 Parganas exposes the real truth behind the ongoing special intensive revision of the electoral list.“
He further said the ADM instructed officials not to select the ‘not verified’ option under any circumstances and to report any confusion directly to him or the election officer. Officials were also given a target to complete 3,000 verifications daily.
The BJP leader described these orders as direct and illegal directives to manipulate the verification process. He said officials were being told to deliberately avoid marking entries as ‘not verified,’ even if proper verification had not been done. According to him, this amounts to a blatant misuse of administrative power, used at the behest of the TMC to protect and conceal ineligible voters and fake entries, which have been systematically added to the voter list to maintain TMC’s vote bank politics.
Adhikari alleged that the Mamata Banerjee government is using the district administration as a weapon to undermine the Election Commission’s clear and transparent voter list directives. He claimed the TMC fears the genuine SIR will expose their long-standing electoral fraud.
He appealed to the Election Commission to immediately take cognisance of this pattern of informal administrative pressure and initiate a high-level investigation into the role of the ADM and other officials involved in issuing or following these illegal instructions. He also demanded strict disciplinary and legal action against all culpable officials who weaken democracy at the ruling party’s behest.
