Beijing, May 12: The number of passengers traveling through Beijing Port has surged past 8 million, thanks to a series of immigration policies aimed at easing travel. According to the Beijing Border Inspection Center, as of 11:30 AM on Tuesday, the total number of passengers this year has exceeded 8 million, marking a 12% increase compared to last year. Notably, this figure was reached nearly half a month earlier than in the previous year.
Since the beginning of May, the easing of immigration policies and increased travel demand during the holiday season have led to a steady rise in passenger traffic at Beijing Port. A remarkable increase in the number of foreign travelers has been observed. By May 11, over 2.55 million foreign visitors had traveled through the port, accounting for 32% of all passengers. This represents a 33.6% increase compared to the previous year.
Among these foreign travelers, 957,000 entered China under visa-free or temporary entry policies, making up 70.8% of all foreign arrivals. The main reasons for visiting China include tourism, business exchanges, and visiting friends and relatives.
Currently, China has a unilateral visa-free arrangement with 50 countries, while full visa-free agreements are in place with 29 countries. Additionally, a 240-hour visa-free transit policy has been implemented for citizens of 55 countries. These policies have made travel to China more convenient and efficient for foreign visitors compared to previous years.
Regarding residents of mainland China, over 4.92 million Chinese citizens have entered or exited through Beijing Port, representing 61.7% of all passengers. South Korea, Thailand, and Singapore remain the most popular destinations among Chinese travelers.
