New Delhi, May 19: The Supreme Court delivered a significant ruling on street dogs on Tuesday. The apex court upheld its decision to remove stray dogs from public spaces, prompting varied responses from legal professionals.
Advocate Vivek Sharma expressed to reporters that this was a commendable decision by the judiciary. He noted that the ruling can be divided into three main parts, highlighting that the right to life under Article 21 is a fundamental right.
In contrast, Advocate Nandita Sharma criticized the ruling for lacking balance. She pointed out that while the court addressed human concerns, it overlooked the plight of animals. She emphasized the cruelty faced by animals and mentioned that the Supreme Court dismissed all their applications. According to her, if a dog bites someone, the state should be held responsible.
Advocate Aditya Jha, a petitioner in the case concerning street dogs, stated that this matter has been ongoing for a long time. The case, Aditya Jha vs. Delhi Municipal Corporation, has finally reached a conclusion after much anticipation. It encompasses issues related to vaccination, sterilization, and other matters concerning stray dogs, with the court issuing strict orders.
Advocate Puneeta condemned the ruling as inhumane and unacceptable. She questioned the logic of removing dogs from the streets while failing to manage stray cows, which are also causing problems.
Animal rights activist Gauri Muleki expressed concern that the court initially suggested removing dogs from various areas but now leaves the decision to states for appropriate action. The court has mandated compliance with animal birth control rules, ensuring that each district will have an ABC center with trained personnel and effective monitoring systems, which she deemed crucial.
Former Union Minister Vijay Goyal welcomed the Supreme Court’s order regarding stray dogs. He mentioned that his organization, Lok Abhiyan, has been addressing the issues caused by stray dogs for several years and continues to advocate for this cause.
BJP MP Atul Garg also supported the Supreme Court’s decision, suggesting that, for public safety, stray dogs should be sent to shelter homes, similar to other stray animals.
Residents of Greater Noida backed the Supreme Court’s ruling on street dogs, deeming it essential for public safety, especially for children and the elderly, as incidents of dog attacks have been on the rise.
