Supreme Court Expresses Anger Over Negligence in Gurugram Rape Case Involving Young Girl

New Delhi, March 25: The Supreme Court has expressed its displeasure regarding the negligence of police and judicial magistrates in the rape case of a four-year-old girl in Gurugram. During the hearing, the court ordered the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter.

During the proceedings, Solicitor General (ASG) Aishwarya Bhati informed the bench that the magistrate court’s report had not yet been received by the court. However, the Gurugram Police Commissioner and the investigating officer were present. In a previous hearing, the court had shown frustration and instructed these officials to appear with complete records. The court also expressed concern that the accused was standing very close to the girl when her statement was recorded by the magistrate.

The Supreme Court ordered the formation of an SIT led by female IPS officer Nazneen from the Haryana cadre and directed the state government to issue a notification for this SIT. The court also ordered the removal of the Gurugram Police Commissioner and other officials involved in the investigation from the inquiry process. Additionally, the Supreme Court issued a ‘show cause notice’ to these officials.

Notices were also sent to the members of the Child Welfare Committee, asking them to explain why they should not be removed from their positions. Furthermore, the Supreme Court sought clarification from Dr. Babita Jain of Max Hospital regarding why she altered her medical report.

The court has now ordered that the case be heard before a senior female judicial officer in the POCSO court. It also instructed Haryana police to record statements from female officers and directed the parents of the victim to submit an affidavit in a sealed envelope.

The next hearing in this case is scheduled for April 6. The court emphasized that all officials must act with full accountability in this serious and sensitive matter to ensure that justice is served for the victim and that the investigation is conducted transparently.
