
Beijing, February 26: German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has embarked on his first official visit to China during his tenure. He is the latest European leader to visit China in the past three months, following trips by leaders from France, Ireland, Finland, and the United Kingdom.
There is significant attention on how China and Europe will cooperate to address uncertainties in the international landscape. A global survey released by CGTN indicates that 83.9% of respondents believe that European countries seeking collaboration with China can effectively tackle these uncertainties.
In recent years, annual trade between China and Germany has remained above $200 billion, with bilateral investments exceeding $65 billion. Together, they account for nearly a quarter of China’s total engagement with the European Union. Last year, bilateral trade between China and Germany reached €251.8 billion, reflecting a 2.1% increase compared to 2024. China has become Germany’s largest trading partner. The survey revealed that 90.2% of respondents view China’s vast market as a significant opportunity for German enterprises.
As the second and third largest economies in the world, China and Germany are not only deeply intertwined in trade and economic cooperation but also share extensive common interests in global governance areas such as climate change, green energy, and the digital economy. In this context, 83.6% of respondents believe that a stable and healthy China-Germany relationship is crucial not only for the interests of both nations but also has a leading and clear impact on overall China-Europe cooperation.
