Rick Pitino marked a significant milestone in his coaching career by securing his 900th official win as St. John’s men’s basketball team rallied to defeat Xavier Musketeers 88-83 in Cincinnati on Saturday.
Strong Start and Mid-Game Struggles
St. John’s began the game on a high note, leading 20-11 early on with Ian Jackson scoring eleven points. However, the team’s momentum slowed as reserves stepped in, allowing Xavier to gain control. The Musketeers capitalised on the opportunity, shooting 50% from the field and hitting seven out of fourteen three-pointers in the first half. They ended the half with a strong 38-17 run, taking a 12-point lead into the break.
Second-Half Turnaround
Xavier extended their lead to 55-39 with over 17 minutes left in the game, but St. John’s responded with an impressive 16-1 run. Though Xavier’s Tre Carroll scored eleven consecutive points to hold the lead, the Red Storm regained control with a 13-3 run once Carroll rested. Key plays included Oziyah Sellers’ three-point play, which put St. John’s ahead 75-70 with just over six minutes remaining.
Clutch Performances Seal Victory
St. John’s frontcourt stepped up in the second half. Dillon Mitchell nearly achieved a triple-double with 17 points, seven rebounds, six assists, and four steals. Bryce Hopkins bounced back from a slow first half to score 14 of his 18 points after the break, while Zuby Ejiofor contributed 13 points, 11 rebounds, and defensive plays despite fouling out late.
The closing minutes saw intense exchanges between the teams. Tre Carroll led Xavier with a career-high 31 points, including a crucial three-pointer that narrowed St. John’s lead. However, the standout was Dylan Darling, who scored all eleven of his points in the second half. Darling’s key baskets, including a step-back three-pointer with under a minute left, proved decisive.
After the game, Pitino praised Darling’s composure, saying he had “balls as big as church bells.” St. John’s defence then denied Xavier’s final attempt, and Ruben Prey’s putback laid the foundation for the final 86-82 lead.
St. John’s will next face Butler Bulldogs at Madison Square Garden on January 28, as Pitino pursues his 1,000th career win.
