Special Screening of Mehrunisa Celebrates Womens Rights on International Womens Day

New Delhi, March 6: On March 8, in honor of International Women’s Day, a special screening of the film ‘Mehrunisa,’ directed by Sandeep Kumar, will take place at the Austrian Cultural Forum and the Austrian Embassy.

This screening will not only be held in Delhi but also across six Austrian honorary consulates located in Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, and Sri Lanka, showcasing the film in various countries. Local women’s organizations will provide venues for these screenings.

‘Mehrunisa’ tells the inspiring story of a woman from a noble family in Lucknow who carved her path in Bollywood on her own terms, winning the hearts of fans with her exceptional acting skills.

The film follows the journey of 85-year-old Farukh Jafar, who left her ancestral mansion in Lucknow to pursue her dreams. It highlights her struggles, which ultimately became a source of inspiration for other women. Previously, the film was showcased at an international film festival in 2021.

Filmed in various locations around Lucknow, ‘Mehrunisa’ features Farukh Jafar alongside Tulika Banerjee and Ankit Dixit. The film is female-oriented, with Jafar leading the cast at the age of 85. Tragically, this was her final film, as she passed away on October 15, 2021, after battling a long illness.

Farukh Jafar was a well-known name in Hindi cinema, having worked with several major stars before taking a long break. She made her debut in the film ‘Umrao Jaan,’ playing the role of Rekha’s mother. Following that, she appeared in films like ‘Swades,’ ‘Gulabo Sitabo,’ ‘Amma Ki Boli,’ ‘Anwar Ka Ajab Kissa,’ and ‘Peepli Live.’ In ‘Gulabo Sitabo,’ she portrayed Amitabh Bachchan’s wife, who elopes with her old lover to save their mansion. Her vibrant role and lively character continue to resonate with audiences today.
