Sinner Triumphs at Miami Open, Matches Djokovics Record

Miami, March 22: Jannik Sinner secured a convincing victory against Damir Dzumhur in the first round of the Miami Open, winning 6-3, 6-3 at Hard Rock Stadium. With this win, Sinner has equaled a record held by tennis legend Novak Djokovic.

Sinner came close to matching Djokovic’s delivery, falling just eight points short. Following his title wins at the Paris Masters and Indian Wells last November, he has now matched Djokovic’s record of 24 consecutive set wins in ATP Masters 1000 events.

He will have the opportunity to surpass Djokovic in his next match against 30th seed Corentin Moutet, who defeated Tomas Machac 6-0, 1-6, 6-4.

After the match, Sinner stated, “I think sometimes the scoreboard matters. For me, I try to improve as a player and keep myself in a position to play as many matches as possible. I always treat every opponent the same and strive to give my best on the court with a positive attitude.”

Sinner is aiming for his second title in Miami, having previously won in 2024. The Italian has no ATP ranking points to defend in South Florida, providing him with a chance to gain momentum in his battle against world number one Carlos Alcaraz.

After lifting his first trophy of 2026 at Indian Wells, Sinner is looking to become the first player since Roger Federer in 2017 to complete the prestigious ‘Sunshine Double.’

In other news, Alexander Shevchenko made a successful return to ATP Masters 1000 events, eliminating Ben Shelton from the Miami Open. With a surprising score of 6-7(3), 7-6(3), 6-3, the Kazakhstani player achieved his third top-10 victory, knocking Shelton down to 1-4 in his home state of Florida.
