Shiv Sena Spokesperson Criticizes Opposition Protests as Self-Serving

New Delhi, October 7 (Daily Kiran) : In a strong rebuttal to recent opposition protests, Shiv Sena spokesperson Sanjay Nirupam asserted that these demonstrations are not aimed at preserving democracy but rather at protecting the personal interests of political leaders. His comments came amid ongoing protests concerning the Election Commission and the SIR process.

Nirupam stated, “I said this yesterday, and I reiterate today: the protest march by opposition MPs on Tuesday, which they claimed was to save democracy, was actually about saving their own families. They took to the streets because many of these leaders run their parties like private limited companies.”

He highlighted a decline in the political influence of opposition parties since Prime Minister Narendra Modi took office, noting their continuous electoral defeats. Instead of addressing the root causes of their failures, they have shifted the blame onto the Election Commission. “They criticize the SIR, then the EVMs, and now they are attacking the Chief Election Commissioner. There is no justification for this,” he added.

Nirupam emphasized that the Election Commission is a constitutional body established by the Constitution. The appointments of the Chief Election Commissioner and other commissioners are made according to constitutional provisions, and there are constitutional processes for their removal. He argued that such theatrics would yield no results and urged the opposition to engage with the public on fundamental issues.

He also pointed out that the SIR process is constitutionally mandated and supervised by the Supreme Court, similar to procedures that existed during the Congress government’s tenure. “You are questioning the appointments of election commissioners when, under Congress, only the Prime Minister decided who would be appointed,” he said.

With the establishment of a new system under Modi, which includes a committee with opposition leaders, Nirupam claimed this is a more transparent approach than before. Responding to another query, he likened the opposition’s movements to a reality show, referencing their announcement of “Season 2” at Jantar Mantar. He noted that the matter concerning the Chief Election Commissioner is currently pending in the Supreme Court, which has issued a notice that must be addressed in the coming days.

As Modi marks 25 years at the helm, Nirupam remarked, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been at the peak of power for the past 25 years, serving nearly 12 years as Chief Minister of Gujarat and the last 13 years as Prime Minister of India.”
