New Delhi, October 7 (Daily Kiran) : A Samajwadi Party MP has raised serious concerns about the impartiality of the Election Commission amidst allegations of bias. Speaking at a rally in New Delhi on October 7, MP Jiyaur Rahman Bark emphasized the importance of the electoral process in safeguarding democracy. He described issues related to the voter list as a matter of public interest and warned that diminishing public trust in constitutional institutions poses a significant threat to democracy.
Bark criticized the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), stating, “Whenever peaceful protests are held, whether by MPs, MLAs, or the general public, they are taken into custody. This has happened again on Tuesday. This issue is not just about opposition parties; it concerns the public. Voters’ rights are being undermined, and we are protesting to stop this.”
He declared that the protests would continue until the resignation of Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the restoration of cut votes. Bark expressed concern that if the Election Commission fails to maintain impartiality, free elections would be impossible, leading to a constitutional crisis.
Bark stated, “If the Election Commission is not fair, how can elections be fair? If elections are not fair, how can a constitutional government emerge? There seems to be something amiss, and it feels like the Election Commission is working to benefit the BJP.”
He insisted on immediate action, stating, “We demand his resignation; otherwise, we will not remain silent. This is a public issue, and the people are slowly realizing it. This will evolve into a larger movement.”
Congress MP J.B. Mathur also weighed in, noting that leaders from the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance, including Rahul Gandhi, are planning to approach the Election Commission to voice their demands. He criticized Law Minister Kiren Rijiju for dismissing these actions as mere drama, asserting that it disrespects democracy and the voices of the people.
Mathur added, “A significant protest took place in the capital, yet they want to file an FIR against Rahul Gandhi. They can file one FIR, five, ten, or even a thousand, but Rahul Gandhi will continue to lead this protest.”
