New Delhi, March 30: Sheetal Devi has been honored as the ‘Para Archer of the Year’ by World Archery, expressing heartfelt gratitude for the recognition. The global governing body awarded her this title for her outstanding performance and contributions to the sport over the past year.
This accolade marks a remarkable conclusion to a historic season in which she clinched her first world title at the World Archery Para Championship held in Gwangju. Sheetal became the first woman to win the para archery world championship without hands, defeating Paralympic champion Ozgnur Kyu Giridi in the compound women’s individual final. Additionally, she secured a silver medal in the women’s team event and a bronze in the mixed team competition.
In 2025, Sheetal was the first Indian archer to win the ‘BBC Emerging Athlete of the Year’ award, following her bronze medal win in the mixed team event with Rakesh Kumar at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. She was also recognized as the ‘World Archery Para Woman of the Year’ in 2023 and received accolades as the best young athlete from the Asian Paralympic Committee. In 2024, she was awarded the prestigious ‘Arjuna Award.’
Adding another milestone to her career, Sheetal made history in December by being selected for India’s ‘able-bodied’ compound archery team for the Asia Cup in Jeddah, further highlighting her exceptional skills and versatility.
On the social media platform X, Sheetal expressed, “Being named among the world’s best para archers and now chosen as the best by World Archery is a very special feeling. My heart is filled with gratitude, emotions, and everything I have gained on this journey. Thank you.”
Born with phocomelia (a congenital physical disorder), Sheetal competes using a unique technique that has garnered global attention for its originality and precision.
Her collection of medals includes significant tournaments such as the Asian Championship, Asian Para Games, World Championship, and Paralympic Games, showcasing her rising stature on the international stage.
