New Delhi, March 5: Following a disappointing performance in the T20 World Cup, significant changes are underway in the Pakistan cricket team. Key players such as Babar Azam, Fakhar Zaman, and Naseem Shah have been dropped from the squad for the upcoming ODI series against Bangladesh. Meanwhile, discussions are ongoing about appointing former captain Sarfaraz Ahmed as the coach for the Test format.
According to reports, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is pleased with Sarfaraz Ahmed’s work with the junior team and is prepared to assign him the role of head coach for the Test team. Sources indicate that Sarfaraz is also willing to take on this responsibility.
Telecom Asia Sport reported that PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has approached Sarfaraz about assuming the head coach position for the Test team. He has agreed to work alongside Shan Masood as captain, as both share a good friendship and can potentially help Pakistan improve its ninth-place standing from the last World Test Championship.
Pakistan is scheduled to play two Tests in the West Indies in July and three Tests in England in August.
However, former captain Shahid Afridi does not consider Sarfaraz Ahmed suitable for the coaching role. Afridi believes that Younis Khan should be appointed as the Test coach. He stated in local media, “With over 10,000 Test runs and recognition as a high-class batsman in the longer format, I think Younis should be given the Test team.”
The position of head coach for the Pakistan Test team has been vacant since December of last year. Azhar Mahmood had ended his contract before the set date of March 2026.
Under Sarfaraz’s captaincy, Pakistan won the Champions Trophy in 2017 and he has played 54 Tests.
