Tiruvananthapuram: A recent scientific investigation into the Sabarimala gold theft case has resolved several critical questions. Tests conducted by ISRO scientists have confirmed that the panels of the sanctum sanctorum (Sannidhanam) doors were not replaced. Instead, the gold layer on the copper sheets was removed through a chemical process.
The findings, submitted to the Special Investigation Team (SIT), were presented before the Kerala High Court on Wednesday. This effectively dismisses rumours suggesting that the sanctum’s structure was entirely altered or handed over to international gangs.
Scientists from ISRO’s Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre reported to the court that the door panels at Sabarimala are original copper sheets. The investigation also clarified that the stolen portion was not solid gold panels, as initially believed, but copper sheets coated with a thin layer of gold.
According to the scientific team, the wooden frame of the sanctum’s doors, locally called ‘Kattil’, was found to be intact and original. Although the sheets that were removed and reinstalled showed a significant reduction in the gold content, this demonstrated that gold was separated without damaging the copper base.
Scientists explained that the visible changes on the panels resulted from chemical reactions during the gold extraction process rather than panel replacement. The mercury and other chemical solutions used affected the surface’s chemical composition, causing differences in colour and texture.
There is no evidence to suggest that the original copper sheets were removed and replaced with new ones.
The SIT informed the High Court that the investigation is ongoing, with comparative analysis of samples taken from the old sanctum doors underway. Officials said a comprehensive joint report, including all test results, will be submitted shortly.
It is expected that this scientific testimony will play a decisive role in directing the investigation’s focus towards understanding the gold removal method and identifying those responsible.
