Mumbai, March 6: Sanju Samson’s talent has never been in question. However, his inability to consistently showcase his skills has been a significant weakness. In the T20 World Cup 2026, he has addressed this issue, delivering explosive performances that have secured India a spot in the finals.
Samson’s recent innings have transformed the perceptions of cricket critics regarding his abilities. In a press conference following the match against England, he shared insights into his mental preparation. “The period leading up to the tournament was not easy for me. Not being selected for the team was mentally challenging. During the New Zealand series, I was trying hard to secure my place, which may have added extra pressure,” he explained.
Reflecting on his journey, he noted, “Looking back, I realized I should have approached the game with a calmer mindset. While T20 cricket is fast-paced and aggressive, patience and fundamentals are equally important. Many top batsmen struggle to score consistently in this format, so respecting the core principles of the game is crucial.”
Samson emphasized, “I revisited the basics of the game and prepared myself better. This shift has contributed to my success in the tournament so far.”
The wicketkeeper-batsman added, “During tough times, my close ones, whom I love and support, stood by me. I turned off my phone and stayed away from social media, which reduced my interactions. I believe this helped me focus in the right direction, and I’m pleased with my performance.”
The match against the West Indies was akin to a knockout round. Opening the innings, Samson scored an unbeaten 97 runs off 50 balls, leading India to victory and a place in the semifinals. In the semifinal against England, he played a crucial role, scoring 89 runs off 42 balls. Both innings were played under immense pressure when the team needed him most, earning him the Player of the Match title in both games.
All eyes will be on Samson’s performance in the T20 World Cup 2026 final against New Zealand on March 8.
