Sanju Samson Reflects on Indias Record Run Chase Against New Zealand

Sanju Samson discusses Indias thrilling victory over New Zealand, highlighting their aggressive batting strategy in the record run chase.

Christchurch, October 22 (Daily Kiran) : India achieved a thrilling victory over New Zealand in Christchurch on October 22, successfully chasing down a target of 226 runs with four wickets to spare. This win gives India a 1-0 lead in the five-match T20 series. Wicketkeeper-batsman Sanju Samson played a pivotal role, scoring 67 runs off just 33 balls, including eight fours and four sixes, while partnering with Abhishek Sharma for a brisk opening stand of 93 runs.

After the match, Samson was named ‘Player of the Match.’ During the post-match presentation, he remarked that there was no elaborate strategy behind their explosive start. “We talk a lot on the field, but it doesn’t really mean much. We just watch the ball and hit it hard. This approach has worked well for us. I enjoy opening with Abhishek,” he stated.

Samson noted that the pair felt they could finish the match quickly after their strong start. He explained, “The ball was swinging a lot, especially in the second innings, but it was coming onto the bat nicely. We knew we had to maintain our posture and play positively during the powerplay. Once we got off to a great start, we felt we could finish the game quickly. Scoring almost 90 runs in the first six overs was fantastic for us.”

In front of a packed crowd at Hagley Oval, Samson credited the team’s collective effort for the victory. “It feels great. I think we are in that moment right now, having won the match. No matter what contribution you make, being part of a winning team is always rewarding. Today was a complete team effort, and I’m thrilled we started the series so well.”

Samson also mentioned that his wicketkeeping experience helped him gauge the pitch conditions quickly. “Absolutely, while keeping, you think about how to bat. I had already decided how to play while keeping, but by the time I came out to bat, the conditions had changed quite a bit. In the first innings, the ball was coming onto the pitch slowly, but in the second innings, due to the dew on the outfield, it was coming onto the bat beautifully. I really enjoyed batting today.”
