Kolkata, December 9. The Indian cricket team will play the first match of the five-match T20 series against South Africa on Tuesday at Barabati Stadium, Cuttack. If wicketkeeper-batsman Sanju Samson and left-handed explosive batsman Tilak Varma get a chance in this match, they could achieve a very special milestone.
Tilak Varma has scored 996 runs in 33 innings across 36 T20 matches, including 2 centuries and 4 half-centuries. With just 4 runs away, he will join the list of Indian batsmen who have scored 1,000 or more runs in international T20 cricket. It is likely that Tilak will get an opportunity in Cuttack and achieve this significant feat.
Wicketkeeper-batsman Sanju Samson is also very close to reaching 1,000 runs in T20 cricket. He has accumulated 995 runs in 43 innings over 51 matches, with 3 centuries and 3 half-centuries. He needs only 5 runs to cross the 1,000-run mark, which he could accomplish if selected for the Cuttack T20 match.
Since the entry of Shubman Gill in T20s, Samson lost his place as an opener and was assigned to bat in the middle order, where he did not perform as effectively. In the last few matches of the Australia T20 series, Jitesh Sharma replaced Samson. It remains to be seen whether Jitesh will be in the playing eleven or Samson will get a chance in Cuttack.
So far, 12 Indian batsmen have scored 1,000 or more runs in the T20 format. This list includes Rohit Sharma (4,231), Virat Kohli (4,188), Suryakumar Yadav (2,754), KL Rahul (2,265), Hardik Pandya (1,860), Shikhar Dhawan (1,759), MS Dhoni (1,617), Suresh Raina (1,605), Rishabh Pant (1,209), Yuvraj Singh (1,177), Shreyas Iyer (1,104), and Abhishek Sharma (1,012).
