Ross Taylor Backs Fin Allen and Tim Seifert as New Zealand’s Opening Pair for T20 World Cup

New Delhi: Former New Zealand batsman Ross Taylor believes the Black Caps will remain competitive in the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. He expects Fin Allen and Tim Seifert to form the opening combination for the team in the tournament.

Allen recently won the Big Bash League (BBL) with Perth Scorchers, scoring 466 runs at a strike rate of 184.18, making him the highest run-scorer in the tournament. He has now rejoined the New Zealand squad ahead of their final T20 International against India, scheduled for Saturday in Thiruvananthapuram.

Talking about New Zealand’s chances, Taylor said, “I think New Zealand always remains competitive when it comes to ICC World Cups. Playing against India in these conditions will be good preparation for them. Although losing the first three matches 3-0 was not ideal, their comeback win in Visakhapatnam will boost their confidence.”

He added, “India will obviously be one of the favourites, so playing them in their own conditions will benefit New Zealand. I don’t think it will be a difficult decision. I expect Fin Allen and Seifert to open. It will be interesting to see who bats at number three, whether it is Rachin or Conway.”

New Zealand’s best performance in the Men’s T20 World Cup came in 2021 when they finished as runners-up. Taylor suggested that either Conway or Rachin Ravindra might make the playing eleven but not both.

“It’s good they are playing here, but I think they can only pick one of them. If Conway opens, he secures his place in the team. If he doesn’t open, then either he or Rachin will play,” said Taylor.

Addressing concerns about recent injuries, Taylor, who has played 106 T20 Internationals for New Zealand, expressed confidence in the squad’s depth under Mitchell Santner’s leadership. He also emphasised the importance of spin bowling in the upcoming mega event.

“They have Ben Sears as a replacement. Ferguson and Henry might leave for paternity leave midway. The team’s depth has been strong for a long time, but spin bowling will play a major role in this World Cup. Whoever bowls the opening overs will be crucial. It’s not just about how they play spin with the bat, but also how they bowl spin that will be key to their performance,” he explained.

Currently in Goa for the World Legends Pro T20 League, Taylor spoke about reuniting with former teammates and rivals from his international days.
