New Delhi, March 22: Former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa has expressed concerns regarding the Sunrisers Hyderabad’s (SRH) bowling capabilities in the upcoming IPL 2026. He emphasized that while SRH boasts explosive batting, it may not be enough to secure the title. Uthappa pointed out that effectively utilizing bowlers at their home ground remains a significant challenge, especially given the high-scoring nature of the pitch.
Speaking on Jio Hotstar, Uthappa praised SRH’s fearless batting but criticized the suitability of the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium’s flat pitch for bowlers. He noted that the team needs more bowling options to succeed.
“It’s exciting to watch Hyderabad’s aggressive batting, but such a style won’t help in winning the IPL. The team’s bowling is weak. Bowlers are the ones who win you trophies,” Uthappa stated.
He added, “In Hyderabad, they play seven matches, and the pitch is a paradise for batsmen. Even experienced bowlers like Mohammad Shami and Bhuvneshwar Kumar have struggled here.”
Uthappa highlighted the need for bowlers like Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who is clever and adept at swinging the ball, changing pace, and delivering yorkers.
Last season, SRH was exposed due to weak bowling, failing to control matches effectively. The team had a disappointing season, finishing sixth after reaching the finals in 2024. Ahead of IPL 2026, SRH faces a setback as regular captain Pat Cummins is dealing with fitness issues and will not be available for the initial matches. Consequently, wicketkeeper-batsman Ishan Kishan has been appointed as captain.
SRH will kick off their IPL 2026 campaign on March 28 against the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the season’s opening match at RCB’s home ground, M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.
