New Delhi, March 12: Former Indian cricketer Abhinav Mukund believes that the reigning champions, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), will face significant challenges in the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) at their home ground. He likened the team’s initial matches against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to a trial by fire.
Mukund stated that the conditions at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium might be difficult to gauge initially. This is due to the lack of competitive cricket at the venue for nearly eight to nine months, following the chaotic celebrations after RCB’s championship victory last year.
Speaking on Jio Hotstar, Mukund remarked, “For RCB, this is almost uncharted territory as this stadium has not been their strongest suit. They need to adapt quickly. It is crucial for RCB to understand and assess the conditions faster than other teams, especially since no cricket has been played at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in the last 8-9 months.”
He emphasized that the defending champions will encounter formidable opponents at their home ground, starting with SRH on March 28 and CSK on April 4. Last season, RCB struggled with home match losses, making these upcoming games particularly challenging. “I am sure they have already begun preparations for this,” he added.
Last year, RCB’s performance away from home was better than at their own ground. The Bengaluru franchise managed to win only two home matches while losing three, with one match being washed out due to rain. This highlights their struggle to establish a stronghold at home.
In total, RCB has played 96 IPL matches at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, securing 46 wins and suffering 47 losses, with four matches ending without a result.
