RBI Imposes ₹31.80 Lakh Fine on Airtel Payments Bank

Mumbai, March 30: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed a fine of ₹31.80 lakh on Airtel Payments Bank Limited for failing to comply with certain disclosure requirements in its financial statements.

This penalty was enforced under the provisions of Section 47A(1)(c) and Section 46(4)(i) of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949.

An assessment of the bank’s financial position was conducted by the RBI through a statutory inspection and supervisory evaluation (ISE 2025) as of March 31, 2025.

The central bank stated, “The RBI has imposed a fine of ₹31.80 lakh on Airtel Payments Bank Limited for non-compliance with certain provisions of disclosure requirements in financial statements.”

Following supervisory findings related to the bank’s non-compliance with RBI directives, a notice was issued to the bank, asking why a penalty should not be imposed for failing to adhere to these directives.

The RBI noted, “After considering the bank’s response to the notice, additional submissions, and oral arguments presented during a personal hearing, the RBI found the allegations regarding the non-disclosure of certain complaints in the annual financial statements for the fiscal year 2024-25 to be valid, making the monetary penalty appropriate.”

This action is based on deficiencies in regulatory compliance and does not imply any judgment on the validity of transactions or agreements made by the bank with its customers.

Furthermore, the central bank added, “Additionally, imposing a monetary penalty will not adversely affect any other actions that the RBI may initiate against the bank.”
