New Delhi, April 21: England’s head coach Charlotte Edwards has identified spinner Sophie Ecclestone as one of the key players for the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026. Edwards praised Ecclestone’s remarkable comeback following a challenging period last year.
Ecclestone faced difficulties after the Ashes series, leading to a brief hiatus from cricket. However, she made a strong return, showcasing her skills during the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025, where she ranked third among the top wicket-takers.
Edwards noted that the break was essential for Ecclestone, who now appears more enthusiastic and content. The coach emphasized that a player’s happiness positively influences their performance. Additionally, Ecclestone aims to contribute not only with her bowling but also in batting, striving to develop herself as an all-rounder, which could greatly benefit the team.
This year, England will host the World Cup, providing the team with an advantage in familiar conditions. Edwards shared her experience of leading the team to victory in 2009, stating that playing in a home World Cup is a significant moment in a player’s career. Despite England not winning a major ICC title since 2017, Edwards mentioned that the team is currently focused solely on their group matches. She believes that progressing beyond the group stage is the top priority.
England is placed in Group B alongside Sri Lanka, New Zealand, Ireland, West Indies, and Scotland. The team will kick off their campaign on June 12 against Sri Lanka at Edgbaston. Edwards acknowledged the strength of teams like India, Australia, and South Africa in the other group, indicating that the tournament will be quite challenging.
