Rahul Gandhi to Visit Madhya Pradeshs Balaghat on October 1 to Meet Families of Deceased Tribal Children
Rahul Gandhi plans to meet families of tribal children who died amid health crises in Balaghat, Madhya Pradesh, on October 1.

Balaghat, September 29 (Daily Kiran) : Prominent tribal leader Umang Singhar announced that Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, will visit Balaghat district in Madhya Pradesh on October 1. This visit aims to meet the families of tribal children who lost their lives during a health crisis in the region.
Singhar stated that Gandhi will tour the affected tribal areas of Baihar and Birsa to understand the ground realities by speaking with the families of the deceased children.
As the Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly, Singhar criticized the Madhya Pradesh government for its negligence, noting that over 22 tribal children have died. He emphasized that Gandhi’s visit is crucial for grasping the dire situation faced by these families.
This visit comes amid growing concerns over the deaths of Baiga tribal children in remote villages of Balaghat. Official reports indicate that 20 children have died in these areas, raising questions about healthcare, nutrition, and medical facilities available to tribal communities. A central National Joint Outbreak Response Team has investigated 196 cases, including 156 children under the age of 10.
The investigation revealed multiple health-related issues rather than a single disease. Among 64 samples tested, 25 confirmed cases of measles were found, while 27 out of 32 patients were diagnosed with malaria. These fatalities have reignited discussions about the health and nutrition of Madhya Pradesh’s tribal populations.
Notably, according to the 2011 census, Scheduled Tribes make up approximately 21% of the state’s population, with 47 of the 230 assembly seats reserved for these communities.
Balaghat is a tribal-dominated and forested area bordering Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh, historically recognized as one of Madhya Pradesh’s main Naxalite-affected regions. Recently, following security operations and the surrender of Naxalites, the state government declared Madhya Pradesh free from Naxalism.
With assembly elections scheduled for 2028, Gandhi’s visit to Balaghat comes just 13 days after his previous trip to the state, where he addressed the ‘Students’ Echo’ program in Indore on September 19, discussing issues related to education and employment.
