Rabi Crop Sowing Crosses 479 Lakh Hectares in Current Fiscal Year

New Delhi, 10 December: According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, the total area sown under Rabi crops as of 5 December in the current winter season has exceeded 479 lakh hectares. This is 27.89 lakh hectares more than the 451.12 lakh hectares recorded during the same period last year.

Official data further states that in the fiscal year 2025-26, wheat has been sown over 241.4 lakh hectares, rice on 10.98 lakh hectares, and pulses on 106.21 lakh hectares. In comparison, during the same period last year, wheat, rice, and pulses were sown on 217.81 lakh hectares, 9.86 lakh hectares, and 105.78 lakh hectares respectively.

Additionally, under coarse cereals and minor millets, 36.28 lakh hectares have been covered till 5 December, while oilseeds sowing has reached 84.14 lakh hectares.

This year, the area under gram cultivation in pulses reached 77.84 lakh hectares, up from 75.16 lakh hectares in the previous year’s corresponding period. Similarly, urad dal sowing covered 1.84 lakh hectares compared to 1.67 lakh hectares last year.

Within coarse cereals and minor millets, ragi sowing area stood at 0.64 lakh hectares, higher than last year’s 0.46 lakh hectares. Small millet sowing was at 0.12 lakh hectares versus 0.09 lakh hectares last year. Maize sowing covered 11.41 lakh hectares compared to 11.05 lakh hectares in the previous year, and barley sowing reached 5.95 lakh hectares against 5.68 lakh hectares last year.

The increase in sowing area is expected to boost production, which will enhance farmer incomes and help keep food inflation under control.
