Chandigarh, April 5: Sunil Jakhar, the President of the Punjab BJP, expressed deep concern on Sunday regarding the plight of farmers in the state. He highlighted that while farmers are facing significant losses due to unseasonal rains and hailstorms, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann is preoccupied with political rallies under waterproof tents.
Jakhar addressed the media, stating that the state government has failed to alleviate the farmers’ suffering. He urged for immediate crop damage assessments and compensation to be provided.
He pointed out that over ₹13,000 crores received from the central disaster relief fund are already with the state government, a fact the Chief Minister acknowledged only six months later.
Criticizing the Mann-led government, Jakhar alleged that waterproof tents are being set up in markets with permanent sheds, benefiting favored contractors from Delhi while farmers’ crops are left to suffer from adverse weather conditions.
Jakhar claimed that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government has purchased buses from the same Rajasthan company it previously accused of benefiting the former Congress government.
He dismissed the government’s anti-corruption campaign as merely a publicity stunt, accusing it of misusing public funds. Corruption has reached alarming levels in the state, while deteriorating law and order and the rising drug problem pose serious challenges for the people of Punjab.
Referencing Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s recent visit to Punjab, Jakhar stated that the BJP has presented a roadmap for change, and the confusion spread by opposition parties against the BJP is beginning to dissipate.
He asserted that only the capable leadership of the BJP can restore peace in Punjab, control the drug crisis, and strengthen communal harmony. The people of the state are now ready for change.
