Sangrur, September 4 (Daily Kiran) : Amritsar, September 4 — Punjab Congress President Amarinder Singh Raja Wading has strongly criticized the Bhagwant Mann government following an incident in Sangrur where police allegedly assaulted a protester. He condemned the act and called for action against the involved police officials, demanding the suspension of the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) and the filing of a case against the officers involved.
Wading stated that the police’s treatment of the individual who displayed a black flag during the protest against Chief Minister Mann was inhumane. He emphasized that showing a black flag should not be grounds for such aggressive action. The Congress leader insisted that any dissent against the government should be met with lawful conduct, not violence.
He further alleged that there was an attempt to portray the protester as being under the influence of drugs. Wading questioned why the police resorted to violence instead of conducting a medical or drug test if that was the case.
Linking the incident to human rights violations, Wading announced he has written a letter regarding the matter. He reiterated his demand for the immediate suspension of the SSP in Sangrur and the dismissal of the involved officers, urging that a criminal case be registered against them. He stressed the necessity for a fair investigation to identify those responsible and ensure they face legal consequences. Wading plans to meet with the victim to gather more information about the incident.
Additionally, he called on Chief Minister Mann to form a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to ensure an independent inquiry. He noted that the government often establishes SITs for various issues and should do the same in this case to clarify the roles of those involved.
Wading also accused the Punjab government of failing to fulfill promises made to its employees, claiming the administration is accumulating debt without providing clear solutions regarding outstanding payments or demands. He expressed concerns about dwindling trust among employees regarding commitments, such as payments in installments and the old pension scheme.
The Congress party plans to hold a significant protest in Chandigarh on September 8 to address these issues and the alleged corruption within the government. During the demonstration, they will demand accountability from the Chief Minister. Wading asserted that the Congress will not back down regarding the Sangrur incident and insists on a thorough investigation to uncover the truth and hold those responsible accountable.
