Kolkata, August 10: Following the attack on Mamata Banerjee in the Bijpur area of North 24 Parganas, the minority wing of the Trinamool Congress has announced plans for statewide protests. These rallies are set to take place on Monday across West Bengal.
An insider from the party revealed that protest marches will be organized in every block of the state. Those party legislators who have not joined the rebel faction will express their dissent in the state assembly.
According to party sources, the Trinamool Congress is intensifying its movement in response to the incident that occurred on Sunday. After the assembly election results were announced, Mamata Banerjee had previously staged a sit-in on June 2 against post-election violence and the removal of hawkers. However, the party’s activities have largely remained centered in Kolkata until now.
The party is now focusing on reaching out to its workers in the districts and encouraging them to participate in the new movements. District leaders have been instructed to organize rallies in every block after 2 PM on Monday in protest of the attack.
On Sunday afternoon, Mamata Banerjee visited the family of a Trinamool Congress worker who reportedly died in police custody. The mysterious death of Birju occurred in lock-up on August 8, with allegations from the family claiming he was beaten to death. During her visit, Banerjee faced protests on her way to meet the family, accompanied by two party MPs.
Mamata Banerjee has accused BJP-supported miscreants of being responsible for the incident. Rocks were thrown at her vehicle, and she stated that had the windows been open, she could have suffered serious injuries or worse.
In response, BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari claimed that no BJP members were involved in the protests. He also advised the former Chief Minister to wear a headset while among the public to avoid hearing chants of “thief.”
