New Delhi, February 24: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has extended his congratulations to Rob Jetten, the newly appointed Prime Minister of the Netherlands. The 38-year-old Jetten took the oath of office from the country’s king. This marks the third time in four years that a new Dutch cabinet has been sworn in.
PM Modi expressed his sentiments on the social media platform X, stating, “Congratulations to Rob Jetten on assuming the office of Prime Minister of the Netherlands. India and the Netherlands share excellent relations across various sectors. I look forward to working together to strengthen the growing ties between our two countries and peoples.”
Jetten leads a minority government formed by a coalition of three parties. King Willem-Alexander administered the oath to the Jetten cabinet, after which the cabinet members took charge of their respective ministries. Traditionally, male members arrived in morning coats to meet the king, changing into different attire after the swearing-in ceremony.
The swearing-in took place at the Huis ten Bosch Palace in The Hague. Shortly after, the new cabinet posed for photos with the king on the palace steps. The three coalition parties hold only 66 seats in the 150-seat House, necessitating significant effort to pass any legislation, as they will rely on opposition members for support on nearly every bill.
It is noteworthy that the leaders of the three political parties in the Netherlands reached an agreement on a new coalition deal in January 2026, three months after the election results. This paved the way for a unique minority government, with the centrist D66 party emerging victorious.
Rob Jetten leads the liberal-progressive, pro-European D66 party. He has formed a government in collaboration with the conservative Christian Democrats and the right-wing VVD, despite holding only 66 seats in the lower house of 150.
The new coalition has posed a challenge to the right-wing Freedom Party (PVV), led by the anti-Islam Geert Wilders. The D66 narrowly defeated the PVV in the tough elections held in October, with both parties winning 26 seats, although seven PVV members later left the party.
