Jakarta, April 2: A powerful earthquake has struck Indonesia. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that a 7.4 magnitude quake occurred early Thursday morning off the eastern coast of Indonesia. Following this, an American monitoring agency issued a tsunami warning for areas within a 1,000-kilometer radius of the quake’s epicenter.
According to the USGS, the earthquake’s epicenter was located at 1.20 degrees north latitude and 126.35 degrees east longitude. The China Earthquake Networks Center reported that the quake occurred at a depth of approximately 30 kilometers.
The USGS initially measured the earthquake’s magnitude at 7.8, stating it occurred around 6:48 AM local time in the Molucca Sea.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, based in Hawaii, issued an alert indicating that dangerous tsunami waves could arise within 1,000 kilometers of the epicenter, particularly affecting coastal areas of Indonesia, the Philippines, and Malaysia. The USGS also warned of the potential for hazardous tsunami waves in regions located the same distance from the earthquake’s center.
Indonesia is one of the most seismically active regions in the world, situated on the “Ring of Fire.” This vast 40,000-kilometer arc is characterized by volcanoes and fault lines created by the movement of tectonic plates.
This horseshoe-shaped belt surrounding the Pacific Ocean causes nearly 90 percent of the world’s earthquakes and is known for its ongoing seismic and volcanic activity.
According to the USGS, just last month, on March 3, a 6.1 magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of Sumatra. This quake startled residents, but no significant damage was reported. It originated in the sea near the northeastern tip of Sumatra, prompting many in the frequently shaken region to flee their homes in panic.
Meanwhile, Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency recorded the earthquake’s magnitude at 6.4, noting it struck at a depth of 13 kilometers.
