Kolkata, May 6: Following the recent assembly election results announced on May 4, West Bengal has witnessed significant post-poll violence. A total of 200 FIRs have been registered, and 433 individuals have been arrested, according to Police Director General Siddh Nath Gupta.
The DGP reported that the arrests were made in direct connection to the violence that erupted after the elections. Additionally, around 1,100 people have been placed in preventive custody to maintain order.
This statement from the DGP comes a day after the Election Commission of India (ECI) directed the state’s Chief Secretary, DGP, and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) deployed in West Bengal to ensure a ‘zero tolerance’ policy towards post-election violence.
Gupta also addressed the reduction of security measures outside the residences and offices of outgoing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Trinamool Congress National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee. He clarified that, due to their current positions, both are entitled to specific security arrangements, which are still being provided. However, some additional security personnel previously assigned to them have been reassigned to maintain law and order in the state.
Through media channels, the DGP urged the public not to take the law into their own hands. He stated, “While some individuals may have grievances, they should contact the police instead of resorting to self-help. If an incident occurs and no formal complaint is filed, the police will take necessary action wherever required.”
In line with ECI directives, 500 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) remain deployed in West Bengal to prevent further incidents of violence following the elections. These forces will stay in the state until further orders from the commission.
