PM Modi Urges Water Conservation in Mann Ki Baat, Praises Village Efforts in Tripura, Telangana, and Chhattisgarh

New Delhi, March 29: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called on citizens to reaffirm their commitment to water conservation. He expressed joy over the awareness generated by the ‘Jal Sanchay Abhiyan’ over the past 11 years, highlighting community-level efforts in villages to tackle the water crisis.

During his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ program on Sunday, he stated, “Dear citizens, summer has begun in many parts of the country, which means it is time to renew our pledge for water conservation. Over the past 11 years, the ‘Jal Sanchay Abhiyan’ has significantly raised awareness among the people. Approximately 5 million artificial water conservation structures have been created across the country.”

He also appreciated the community efforts in villages to combat the water crisis, noting, “Under the Amrit Sarovar campaign, around 70,000 Amrit Sarovars have been constructed nationwide. Cleaning of these reservoirs has already commenced ahead of the rainy season.”

During his address, PM Modi praised the initiatives taken by the residents of Wangmun village in Tripura, Mudhugunta village in Telangana, and the people of Korea district in Chhattisgarh.

He shared that Wangmun village, located at an altitude of 3,000 feet in the Jampui Hills of Tripura, faced severe water scarcity. In summer, villagers had to travel long distances for water. Ultimately, they decided to conserve every drop of rain. Today, nearly every household in Wangmun has installed a rooftop rainwater harvesting system, transforming the village into an inspiring example of water conservation.

PM Modi further noted, “Similarly, in Chhattisgarh’s Korea district, farmers have initiated a unique approach. They created small recharge ponds and soak pits in their fields, allowing rainwater to remain and gradually seep into the ground. Over 1,200 farmers in the area have adopted this model, significantly improving the groundwater level.”

He also highlighted the efforts of the residents of Mudhugunta village in Telangana, stating, “The villagers have collectively addressed their water issues. The 400 families in the village built soak pits in their homes, creating a movement for water conservation. This has improved the groundwater level and significantly reduced waterborne diseases.”
